What is time? Time is one of the most important dimensions of our lives and, at the same time, a major scientific problem. So close and, at the same time, so mysterious.
La invenció del temps (The Invention of Time) is an open reflection on memory and our capacity to predict and understand the future. A dive into everything that science has taught us, from the origins of life to black holes, but also, a personal experience that confronts us with profoundly human questions.
The exhibition offers a journey through time from different perspectives. It begins with the perception of time and a world that has been in constant change over millions of years, the origins of the universe, the history of the Earth and the evolution of life.
The journey continues towards human time: our brains, memory and our ability to project ourselves into the future has made us ‘mental time travellers’. It also shows how time is a cultural construct and how, for millennia, we have tried to understand and domesticate its passage through calendars, clocks and other forms of measurement.
Finally, the idea of an absolute time and a completely predictable future is questioned. The arrow of time, entropy, relativity and chaos theory, open up new ways of understanding space and time, while time travel, present in literature, film, the visual arts and music, explores possible futures and lost memories. A journey between disciplines that speaks, above all, about us.
